How to Set Up and Play Cornhole

Posted by Jay on 10th Nov 2015

How far apart should my cornhole boards be? How many points do you get if you make it in the cornhole? I am going to answer all these questions and more. We include a set up and rules guide with every cornhole board set we ship out, this started due to the feed back from our customers.

The first thing that has to be done is setting up the corn hole boards. This is simple, the boards should be 27 feet apart (from front edge to front edge). Make sure the boards are facing each other and they are straight. Ensure the boards are firmly on the ground, so they don't wobble when hit with a cornhole bag. Place all 8 cornhole bags on one end with the colors separated for each team.

Now the game is set up, you are ready to show off your skills. The game should be played with two teams of two people, but you can play singles if you prefer. The difference in singles is that you must change sides for each turn. Decide which player goes first, each player tosses a cornhole bag at the opposite board alternating each throw. The player tosses from the front edge of cornhole board on their side. The bag must land on the board for it to count. In other words, if the bag hits the ground then rolls up on the board, it does not count. Once each player has thrown all their corn hole bags, the score is added up. Making a bag in the cornhole is 3 points, leaving one on the board is 1 point. The official scoring requires that shots cancel, meaning if both players make a cornhole and one leaves a bag on the board, that team receives 1 point. The made cornhole bags cancel and the one bag left on the board receives 1 point. Each consecutive throwing order is determined by the last team that scored. The last team to score throws first during game play. If you want to speed the game up, you can play without canceling. This is recommended for beginners and if there are a lot of people waiting to play. The first team to 21 points is the winner, officially you win by scoring 21 or higher. Although a fun variation is requiring exactly 21 points, otherwise the team gets reset to a point total of 13.

As in most games, the winner keeps playing until they are beaten and the winner throws first to start the next game. We offer 4-hole cornhole as well, it allows for point values to be placed for different cornholes or punishments to be assigned (makes a great drinking game). Four hole cornhole makes a fun variation to the normal game that we all love.
